Pre-travel checklist: what to sort before you leave

8 min read

A practical list covering documents, insurance, digital access, and last-minute details so departure day feels calmer.

Most travel stress comes from unresolved details — not from the trip itself. A short checklist a week before departure (and a shorter one the night before) catches the gaps that usually show up at the airport or hotel desk.

One week before

  • Confirm passport validity (many destinations want 3–6 months remaining) and any visas or ETAs.
  • Save booking references, hotel addresses, and emergency contacts offline — screenshot or PDF.
  • Check whether your travel insurance needs a trip notification, and note the assistance hotline.
  • Review medication: enough supply plus a simple note of names/doses for customs or clinics.
  • Test banking cards abroad (travel notice if your bank asks) and enable a backup payment method.

Insurance & cover gaps

Before you leave, skim the policy summary for: coverage area, deductible, sports exclusions, and cancellation rules. If you booked refundable tickets and flexible hotels, cancellation cover matters less — medical and repatriation still do.

Digital & devices

  • Update OS and apps; enable screen lock and Find My Device.
  • Download offline maps for the first city.
  • Decide how you will handle public Wi‑Fi (mobile data first, or a VPN you already trust).
  • Pack a compact charger and a spare cable — hotel USB ports vary in quality.

Night before & departure morning

  • Pack liquids / liquids bag and any restricted items according to airline rules.
  • Put passport, cards, and phone in one consistent place.
  • Confirm check-in window and baggage allowance.
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary with someone at home.

You do not need a perfect system — you need fewer surprises. Tick the items that apply to your trip, ignore the rest, and keep one emergency contact plus your assistance number somewhere you can reach without data.
